Council deliver food packages and books to help lonely pensioner during lockdown.

A Hornchurch pensioner has praised the council for being there for her during lockdown. 67 year old Geraldine from Hornchurch struggled like many others during the lockdown period and found herself too scared to go out and without any shopping.

She told the Havering Daily: “When lockdown began I got really scared about going out. I really panicked and started to get very low. I live on my own with my dog and had no one to talk to.

“I was too frightened to go to the supermarket and didn’t know how to get my shopping. Luckily a lady I know who works for Havering Mind called me to see how I was and I told her how I felt.

“She was amazing and got everything sorted for me. The same day I received a call from a lady in the council who took my details and that very afternoon I had a bag of shopping outside my door waiting for me.

“A few days later the council lady called me again to see how I was and I said I didn’t have anything to read. That same day a box of books was left outside my door and inside the box was also a box of chocolates. I was so grateful.

“I cannot thank the council enough. They have been amazing in supporting people like me. When the time came they really stepped up to the mark and help their residents.

“The council lady phoned me often to see how I was and provided me with the help and support I needed. I am very grateful to them.”

Havering’s Leader of the Council Councillor Damian White told the Havering Daily: “I am absolutely amazed at the incredible lengths our council officers went to to support our residents during the lockdown period.

“These officers went above and beyond their duty to help Havering residents during this difficult time. I am immensely proud of them and our borough.

“As a local resident too I feel a great sense of pride at how our officers worked throughout the lockdown period. It is important that we all still stay vigilant and do our best during this time.”
