Essex Schools Cross Country Champs, Writtle, 18th January 2020

Tilly Canty and Sydney Foley both bagged English Schools selection places with top-six finishes at a frosty Writtle on Saturday but others will have to race again at the same venue in two weeks to seal one of the two county discretionary places.

Tilly Canty was a fine fifth in the junior girl’s race to qualify for her first English Schools Championships and the Sacred Heart student will make the trip north to represent Essex at Liverpool’s Sefton Park course in March.  Charlotte Evans (8th), Abi Swan (11th) and Ruby Higgins (13th) all have the chance to catch the selectors’ eyes in the South East Schools on 1st February. Freya Long in 24th and Ruby Tillson 930th) also competed for Havering and an unwell Hannah Evans was back in 58th.

Sydney Foley qualified for her fourth English Schools Championships after her fifth-place finish in the Intermediate Girls’ race as the Havering team came out on top, led by Basildon’s Abi Ives who won gold. Natalie Sewell, Maddie Barker and Chloe Rand were 8th, 9th and 10th, and have another chance for a place in Liverpool, as do Hannah Yexley and Nicole Langan in 13th and 14th – all in the lower year of the age group. Isobelle O’Connor was 18th and Ruby Guynan 53rd.  

Matthew Blacklock got the better of Charlie Howell as the pair were seventh and eighth to earn another selection chance, as did Alex Ford in 14th. Dan Peters was 25th.  Owen Fisher led home the club athletes in the junior boys’ event in 18th, with Ryan Carroll 21st, Finley Wolton in 23rd, Toby Johnson 38th and Oliver Taylor-Bush in 51st.

In the senior boys’ event, George Barnacle and Louis Berrett were 18th and 20th.

Indoor Round Up

Sisters Zoe and Mayi Hughes showed good indoor form stateside for Harvard University at the weekend.

Final year (“senior”) Zoe clocked her fastest time for three years with 8.80s in winning the 60m hurdles at Boston University on Saturday, while the previous day younger sister and “freshman” Mayi was fifth in the Triple Jump at Clemson University, South Carolina with a 12.40m jump to equal her indoor best.
