DEAR EDITOR: Approximately £1,000,000! Is this money well spent?

  • Rainham Steel - www.Steel4Builders.co.uk

This week the former Mayor of Havering Linda Trew has written into the Havering Daily’s Dear Editor section.

This information is in the public domain but how many of Havering’s residents’ is this known to? What does being a Local Councillor entail? Council Officers do all the work behind the scenes, write all the reports, draw up all official documents and work out the budgets. Councillors are really just mouth pieces.

Yes they have case work and yes some do have a conscience and do their best for local residents but others just enjoy what they perceive to be power and control and of course the money. Please remember that many of these Councillors have full time jobs so it a nice little earner on the side!

One wonders how many of them would jump ship if allowances were reduced and the main aim was to work for the community regardless of monetary benefits.

We should all be aware that at the end of the day, it’s our money they are paying themselves, surely we should have a say in it?

I have to say that the few councillors that do I know certainly earn their allowance. They will spend hours in meetings and will often find themselves in the middle of residents’ problems and disputes. All I can say is that if people think that it is easy money, why don’t they put themselves forward to do it?

It’s hard to take any stance either way on this letter as so little information is being provided. A link to the public data that provides the details of what the local Mayor is defending would be useful with comments against this. Otherwise it’s not giving readers anything to go on.
I would suggest that good practise would be for local councillors to be expected to be recording their weekly work hours what type of work they are doing for the council, including preparing reports, official documents, meetings, budgets…. so it is clear which councillors are actually putting the time in and pulling their weight and which councillors do very little and are just there for power, control and the money as she suggests. I would also help to justify the overall expenditure and put it into context. If this information is currently available then this local newspaper should be sharing the weblink and commenting on the detail.
