BREAKING: Council car parks to be free at weekends for Christmas period.

Havering’s Leader of the Council has just announced that all council car parks across Havering will have free parking at weekends from November the 30th to January 5th 2020.

Councillor Damian White has just spoken exclusively to the Havering Daily:

I am pleased to announce that following an extra grant, a ‘Boris Bounce’, we are pleased to be able to say that council car parks will be free at weekends from November 30th to January 5th.

We have been reviewing our car parking charges as we are determined to support our high streets and if we do get extra funding as it looks likely we will, then we can work with businesses and see how best to support them.

We have been engaging with local businesses and asking them how best to help them, some want the free thirty minutes returned where as others prefer to have lower charges so that customers can stay in their shops for a longer period of time.

We are hoping to benefit from another Boris bounce funding and I have recently met with the Secretary of State Robert Jenrick where I spoke to him about the local challenges we face such as our car parking charges. He listened carefully and we hope now that more funding can be given’.

In a word No. Tariffs are way too high: £1.50 for 0 to 1hr, £2.50 for 1-2 hrs etc., no wonder the car parks are empty. I went to Hornchurch on Saturday and parked in the Dorrington car park, it was more than half empty, the main car park at the top level was closed. The only way they can get there revenue back seems to be by employing people to issue penalty parking notices which won’t be as much as they used to get by having reasonable parking tarrifs.
I hope the retailers are up in arms because of loss of trade.

The traders are losing custom due to the parking charges. If the traders go out of business the council will lose the business rates and other taxes they collect from the traders.
It is cutting your throat to spite your stomach.

The charges are ill though through. I understand that some of the traders would prefer either a free 1 hour or a low cost 1st hour

Everything needs to be done to encourage the use of the high street – the shop owners and traders have a hard time as it is with on-line shops like amazon offering cheap deals delivered to the door.

If we lose traders in the high-street – they are unlikely to be replaced. It does not take long before the high-street will become a barren place if people do not use it.

I welcome this decision to give free parking at weekends over the festive period – will this also include the night?
Hopefully the decision to remove the free 30 minute parking will be rescinded.

We will have to watch how the leader of the council is able to spin it to show how generous they are.
