Homelessness across Havering is reaching deeply concerning levels, with new figures highlighting the growing scale of the crisis and the increasing pressure on local support services.

In February alone, a staggering 374 stays were recorded at one local charity. It is a truly shocking figure and one that underlines just how many people in the borough are struggling to find somewhere safe to sleep.

Behind that number are real people, real stories, and lives that have taken difficult and often unexpected turns.

On Wednesday, the Havering Daily had the opportunity of seeing this reality first hand.

We met Daryll, a 34 year old father of two whose life has been transformed after overcoming years of addiction and hardship. Now working with Ahava Community, Daryll spends his time actively trying to help others who find themselves in the same position he once faced.

Walking through the streets of Hornchurch, we visited known hotspots where people are sleeping rough. It was a stark and sobering experience. But what stood out most was Daryll’s determination to make a difference.

At every stop, he approached people with compassion, offering support, guidance and a route off the streets through the work of Ahava Community.

Daryll’s own journey is one of redemption. After 12 years caught in addiction and crime, he reached a turning point when he was facing homelessness himself. Through the support of Ahava Community, he rebuilt his life and is now giving back to help others do the same.

Ahava Community, based in Romford, is a charity dedicated to ending homelessness and supporting vulnerable individuals across Havering. Their work is nothing short of incredible.

Through services such as the Catalyst Night Shelter, Thrive supported housing and the Transformations addiction recovery programme, they provide not just shelter, but real opportunities for change. The Hope Café offers hot meals, showers and a safe space, while wider support services help people tackle mental health challenges and rebuild their lives.

Their work is invaluable.

As homelessness rises across the borough, charities like Ahava are stepping in to fill a growing gap, offering hope where it is needed most. There has been a noticeable increase in the number of people asking for help, with record levels of demand now being seen.

What we witnessed on the streets of Hornchurch is a reminder that this issue cannot be ignored.

Homelessness is not just a statistic. It is happening here, in our communities, on our streets.

And while the numbers are alarming, there are people like Daryll and organisations like Ahava Community working tirelessly to change lives every single day.
