Following a recent article in the Havering Daily by Green Party’s Mark Whiley, the Member of Parliament for Romford-Andrew Rosindell MP writes:

“The claim that I supported cuts to local government is complete nonsense. It shows either a fundamental misunderstanding of how Parliament works or a deliberate attempt to mislead the people of Havering.

As a former Conservative Party Member of Parliament, I – along with all MPs aligned with the Government party – was expected and duty bound to support the Government’s budget.

To now pretend that one MP is responsible for decades of a completely flawed local government funding settlement is simply absurd.

Those who propagate thses claims are politically motivated and not seriously engaged with the long term issue or reforming how local government is funded, as I have been.

The truth is that successive governments starting with those led by Tony Blair and Gordon Brown – left this country with deep structural economic problems. Yes, David Cameron took steps to restore some fiscal discipline which I endorsed, but let’s not forget that the Conservatives then went on to borrow trillions during the pandemic, pursuing lockdown policies, which I voted against.

Those lockdowns have had a lasting and devastating financial consequences for local authorities, the taxpayer, and our economy as a whole.

Unlike others, I have been consistent. For twenty-five years, I have lobbied every Government, every Prime Minister, and every Chancellor to reform the unfair funding formula that penalises boroughs like Havering. That is a matter of record.

As for the left-wing Greens who have made these claims, they owe residents a simple explanation. Where exactly is their magic money tree?

Are they proposing to fund their promise through ever more borrowing when Government debt is equal to that of the size of the entire British economy?

Are they going to go cap in hand to the Chinese? Through punitive wealth taxes that will simply drive even more wealth creators, businesses, and jobs out of our country? Or by relying on unrealistic assumptions about endless public spending?

The people of Havering deserve serious solutions to the problems that our borough faces. Reform UK is fighting for fair funding for our borough, supporting growth locally and restoring power to our town hall over issues that matter to local residents – all the while substantially cutting back on waste.

Havering Town Hall is broken. Havering needs reform. That is why local people are turning in their droves to voting Reform UK on 7th May to put our council back in safe hands!”
