A Hornchurch pub has been temporarily barred from selling alcohol following reports of a ten-man fight.

Violence allegedly broke out at the Chequers, in North Street, in the early hours of Wednesday, 11th March that led to chairs being thrown and tables moved, according to a Metropolitan Police report.

The report, submitted to Havering Council’s licence department, detailed a fracas involving ten people born out of a verbal disagreement between two groups of patrons.

One of the ten alleged fighters received a cut to their head, while another was reportedly kicked in the head while he was on the floor.

No bouncers were working and staff could be seen trying to deescalate the situation, according to the police.

The employees later “refused to provide statements” to the police and no entry was recorded in their incident log book, which licensed venues are required to keep up-to-date.

Havering Council’s licensing committee, made up of three elected councillors, temporarily suspended the Chequers’ licence at a private meeting held on the 17th March.

A full review will follow within the next month, which could see it fully stripped of its licence. No date has yet been set.

The North Street pub is currently open between 10am and 11.20pm on weekdays and 10am and 12.20am on Fridays and Saturdays. CCTV showed the fight kicking off at 12.06am.

PC Chris Stockman, a police licensing officer working in Havering, said in his report that “this type of violence and crime is not what should be expected to occur on the streets of Havering”.
