CCTV Petition for Rainham & Wennington Shows Residents’ Real Concerns
News from Rainham and Wennington Labour Action Team.
Rainham & Wennington Labour Action Team are submitting a petition calling for the installation of new public CCTV for Rainham & Wennington ward at the March18 Council meeting, citing ongoing safety concerns, borough‑wide coverage failures, and community demand for visible crime‑prevention measures.
Sue Watson commented, “Residents across Rainham & Wennington have repeatedly raised concerns about anti‑social behaviour, environmental crime, and gaps in visible deterrence. While Havering Council has invested in CCTV upgrades in recent years, significant parts of the borough, including Rainham & Wennington, still remain without reliable coverage or modernised equipment.”
These borough‑wide failures mean that areas such as Rainham & Wennington—already facing pressure from crime and anti‑social behaviour—often lack reliable surveillance support, even while other areas get upgrades.
CCTV is an essential tool for modern community safety. Evidence from Havering’s recent upgrades demonstrates the measurable impact:
- The borough’s upgraded CCTV operations have supported more than 20,000 interventions in just 18 months, including real-time alerts and evidence for prosecutions.
- Re-deployable environmental cameras have resulted in nearly 2,000 enforcement actions, particularly against fly-tipping—an issue frequently raised by Rainham & Wennington residents.
- CCTV supports rapid police coordination, enhances deterrence, reassures the public, and ensures critical evidence is available for investigations and court proceedings.
Siddique Ambia pointed out that recent crime statistics showed the need for CCTV in Rainham & Wennington just as much as other parts of the borough: “Recent analysis shows Rainham & Wennington now has one of the highest crime rate of all wards in Havering, with 93.9 crimes per 1,000 residents, and a year-on-year increase of 23.8%. Residents are confronted by antisocial behaviour in Rainham Village, and face vehicle crime everywhere across the ward.”
By extending CCTV to Rainham & Wennington, residents will benefit from:
- Reduced anti-social behaviour and vandalism
- Faster identification of offenders
- Stronger protection for vulnerable locations
- Improved environmental enforcement
- Greater community confidence and safety
Fay Hough concluded: “Residents deserve to feel safe in their own communities. With so many cameras across Havering finally being upgraded and maintained, now is the time for a reliable CCTV system that delivers real protection. Rainham & Wennington must not be left behind.”
