Pupils from several schools across Havering have been recognised for their creative talents after winning a special Mother’s Day portrait competition.

The children’s artwork is currently on display at Daniel’s View gallery in The Mercury Shopping Centre as part of an exhibition titled “The Women Who Made Us.” The exhibition celebrates the women who shape our lives — including mothers, grandmothers, carers and other inspiring women.

The Mercury shopping centre challenged pupils across the borough to create their best portraits in honour of Mother’s Day.

Hundreds of entries were submitted by pupils from St Mary’s Catholic Primary School, Scargill Infant School, Ardleigh Green School, Squirrels Heath Infant School, Hacton Primary School, Concordia Academy, Emerson Park Academy, Whybridge Junior School, Olive Academies, St Michael’s Catholic Primary School, and Marvin’s Great Create Club.

Natalie Bays, Centre Manager at The Mercury, said:
We’re delighted with the response we received. We have all been overwhelmed by the quality of the artworks.

The Mayor of Havering, Sue Ospreay, attended the event to present certificates and awards to the children in recognition of their creative work.

The portraits were judged by local artists Nigel Hubbard, Geo Jam and Hannah Davis.

Scargill Infant School submitted hundreds of entries and was named the overall winner, scooping a £100 cash prize for the school.
