“We Are Not Unpatriotic And The Police Will Be At The St George’s Day Parade”-Council Leader Hits Back.
Councillor Ray Morgon, Leader of Havering Council, has responded to claims made by The Member of Parliament for Romford Andrew Rosindell MP in regards to the St George’s Day parade.
He said it is not helpful for Andrew Rosindell to politicise the issue or make comments that are detrimental to community cohesion. He stated that what is being said publicly is not true and confirmed that the police will be at the event.
Councillor Morgon explained that the issue relates to new safety requirements under Martyn’s Law, which require additional safeguards to be in place to protect the public. He said the council is working to resolve the matter and stressed that at no point has anyone said the parade cannot go ahead.
He also rejected accusations that the police and the council are being unpatriotic, describing those claims as unbelievable and untrue. He suggested that the comments are being made to appeal to voters ahead of the local elections in May.
Councillor Morgon added that it is extremely concerning that the issue is being raised in this way and that the Scouts are being used in campaigning.
He also said it is extremely concerning that the local police are being criticised, adding that they do an excellent job and should not be brought into disrepute.
