London Sees One Rape Reported Every Hour As New Figures Reveal Scale Of Violence Against Women.
Havering Records 16 Rapes In January, just how safe are women?
We are repeatedly being told London is one of the safest cities in the world. Yet crime figures released by the Metropolitan Police paint a far more troubling picture for many women living in the capital.
In January alone last year, 743 rapes were recorded across London. That figure equates to roughly one rape being reported every hour somewhere in the capital.
The statistics highlight the scale of violence faced by women and girls across the city and raise serious questions about safety on London’s streets and in homes.
In Havering, the figures show that 16 rapes were recorded during the same month. While significantly lower than some inner London boroughs, the number still represents an average of one reported rape roughly every two days within the borough.
Campaigners and community groups have long warned that the true scale of sexual violence is likely to be far higher. Many victims never report attacks to police due to fear, trauma or a lack of confidence in the criminal justice system.
Metropolitan Police figures across London show that hundreds of women come forward each month to report rape offences, but experts say these statistics only represent those who feel able to speak out.
The figures once again place a spotlight on the ongoing challenge of tackling violence against women and girls across the capital and the need for continued action from police, local authorities and support services to ensure victims feel safe to report crimes and receive justice.
