The International Women’s Day Celebration at HASWA on Wednesday 4 March was a joyful and unforgettable event, easily the best one yet. Well done to all the amazing ladies at the Havering Asian and Social Welfare Association, in Elm Park, led by Manjit, who put on this incredible event yesterday, Wednesday 4 March.

The afternoon began with inspiring speeches from Neighbourhoods Supt Sharon Brind, who shared stories from her early career, and Dr Maheen Shahid, who spoke passionately about initiatives to improve health in communities across the borough. Their words set a positive and uplifting tone for the day.

The event was hosted by Councillor Stephanie Nunn who had the pleasure of quizzing guests about the meaning of International Women’s Day and testing their knowledge of the make-up of Havering council in terms of male and female representation. Laughter and friendly competition filled the room as everyone joined in.

After a delicious lunch, we were treated to a lively dance display by Sonia, which quickly turned into a fun dance workshop. The Mayor, Cllr Sue Ospreay, led from the front, encouraging everyone to join in, and it was wonderful to see Cllrs Philippa Crowder and Christine Smith sharing in the fun.

HASWA members then entertained the audience with heartfelt songs and poetry, adding a personal and touching element to the celebration. Excitement continued as we drew the raffle, with smiles all around.

The Mayor thanked everyone for attending and brought the event to a close with a riotous poem she had written herself, leaving everyone laughing and feeling uplifted.

Seventy guests came together to celebrate, including a few very brave men, and the room was filled with warmth, laughter, and camaraderie. A huge thank you goes to everyone who participated in making this such a wonderful and memorable day. The celebration at the Havering Asian and Social Welfare Association was a true joy and a beautiful reminder of the power of community.
