Powerful Play Sparks Eye-Opening Lessons on Drugs and Alcohol for Local Students.
Havering Council is working with local schools to raise awareness of the risks of alcohol and drug use among young people. As part of a five-year plan, the council aims to help 12- to 24-year-olds understand the impact substances can have on their lives, friends and families.
The Daniel Spargo Mabbs Foundation is visiting schools to perform “I Love You, Mum,” a hard-hitting play based on the life of 16-year-old Daniel, who died after taking Ecstasy at a rave. The foundation’s aim is to educate young people about substances and reduce harm.
Councillors Oscar Ford, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, and Gillian Ford, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, attended a performance at Hornchurch High School alongside nearly 300 Year 10 and Year 11 pupils. The performance was followed by a workshop with the cast, giving students practical advice on staying safe, handling peer pressure, and looking out for friends.
The council highlighted that drug and alcohol use among local young people is relatively low. Havering’s BeeWell Survey (2025) found 6% of young people had tried drugs or alcohol. Around 1.8% of pupils reported drinking alcohol a few times per week, and 21% had consumed alcohol at least once in the past six months. Around 1.4% reported using drugs regularly, with 3.5% trying drugs at least once in six months.
Councillor Gillian Ford said the sessions were impactful, offering insight into the pressures young people face and opening discussions about substance use. She added the aim is to prevent drug use and ensure first-class support and recovery where needed.
Councillor Oscar Ford added that while Havering doesn’t have a major problem with young people using drugs or alcohol, awareness and knowledge are key to preventing harm.
Headteacher Serena Madhvani said the sessions were powerful, would leave a lasting impact on pupils, and thanked the council for making the workshops possible.
