Residents on Burnway say they are being terrorised by late-night speeding drivers who treat their quiet residential street like a racetrack, warning the dangerous behaviour is putting lives at risk and could end in tragedy.

Locals in Hornchurch say so-called “boy racers” regularly tear down the long, winding road at high speeds, leaving families fearing for the safety of children, elderly residents and motorists — and claiming their repeated pleas for action have so far gone unheard.

The residential road, which bends along its stretch, is reportedly being used repeatedly at night by drivers racing at excessive speeds, with residents warning the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous.

Residents say they have flagged their concerns to police and local councillors but fear action will only be taken after a serious accident has already happened.

One resident, Frank, described the alarming situation.

“This weekend from 9.30pm until 3am one particular vehicle used the road like Silverstone Circuit. They speed along Burnway, down past the post box, along Glebe Way and back down Burnway. They drive down here at 60, 70 miles per hour,” he said.

“This is a road with many vehicles parked and it is very busy. They will cause a serious accident.”

Residents say the danger is heightened by the road’s layout and the number of vulnerable people who use it daily.

“It’s shocking. This is a road full of children walking to school and elderly residents going shopping. We have already had a car lose control after a group of teenagers crashed and smashed a front wall driving too fast. The road bends in the middle, making it harder for oncoming vehicles.”

Locals say they are now desperate for preventative measures to be introduced before tragedy strikes and hope that by highlighting the problem, authorities will finally take action.
