“Businesses like Umberto’s Italian Restaurant in Hornchurch are being brought to their knees by this Labour Government. Their business rates have jumped from £2,200 to £6,800 and could soon hit £19,000. Pubs and restaurants are being crushed by Labour’s anti-business policies. Small businesses across Romford and Hornchurch are literally fighting for survival.”

The Member of Parliament for Romford, Andrew Rosindell, has spoken in Parliament highlighting the struggles faced by local small businesses dealing with rising business rates. Following his meeting with the owners of Umberto’s, where he heard first-hand about the challenges they are facing, Mr Rosindell called for a debate on the reform of business rates and stressed the importance of supporting local traders.

He visited Umberto’s, a traditional family-run Italian restaurant in Hornchurch, to meet owners Vincenzo and Gina, who have faced a significant increase in their business rates from £2,200 to £6,800, with projections suggesting it could now rise to a whopping £19,000.

Out of frustration and concern for their business, Vincenzo and Gina placed a sign in their door stating ‘No Labour MPs Welcome.’ The couple have run Umberto’s on Hornchurch High Street for 32 years, and the restaurant is widely regarded as a valued part of the community much loved and well respected.

The MP for Romford emphasised the need for practical reform to ensure local businesses can continue to operate and serve their communities and called on an urgent need for a review of business rates.
