Romford and Gidea Park to Host A Celebration of Essex Rugby in Aid of Bowel Cancer UK.
Romford and Gidea Park Rugby Club is proud to announce that Bill Sweeney, Chief Executive Officer of the Rugby Football Union (RFU), will be visiting the club as part of a special celebration of Essex rugby and a fundraising event in support of Bowel Cancer UK.
Bill Sweeney’s attendance highlights the growing recognition of Romford and Gidea Park RFC as a club that combines strong grassroots foundations with ambition, inclusivity and community impact. Founded in 1929, the club has long been at the heart of local rugby, developing players, coaches and volunteers while promoting the core values of respect, teamwork and commitment. The visit of the RFU’s CEO marks another significant milestone for the club and the wider rugby community in Essex.
The event will bring together members, former players, supporters and the wider Essex rugby family, including current Essex President Michael Eyres, for what promises to be a memorable occasion. It is not only a celebration of the sport, but also an opportunity to support a vital cause. Proceeds from the day will go towards Bowel Cancer UK, helping to raise awareness and fund life-saving research and support services.
With the event taking place in the middle of the 2026 Six Nations Championship, Bill Sweeney will be available to discuss all things England rugby. His visit also provides an opportunity to see first-hand how Romford and Gidea Park RFC is increasing playing numbers, strengthening grassroots participation, and expanding opportunities for women’s and girls’ rugby while making the sport more inclusive and accessible across our communities.
A full programme of rugby will take place throughout the afternoon, with a range of matches kicking off from 12.00pm through to 5.00pm, showcasing the future talent of the club. From youth fixtures to senior sides, the day will highlight the exciting next generation coming through at Romford and Gidea Park RFC.
