Dawoodi Bohras New Community Centre Opens in Gidea Park With Cancer Awareness Talk.
A new community centre has officially opened its doors in Gidea Park. The Dawoodi Bohra community of East London marked the occasion by hosting a fundraising and awareness event in support of Macmillan Cancer Support.
The opening coincided with World Cancer Day and formed part of a nationwide initiative taking place across 10 UK cities. Local residents were welcomed into the new centre for an afternoon that combined community hospitality with vital health education, as homemade cakes and savouries were shared alongside conversations about cancer awareness, prevention and early detection.
Guests also heard from Dr Tasneem Husain Rupawala, who delivered an informative talk on cancer screening, prevention and the support services available through Macmillan. The session aimed to break down misconceptions around cancer and encourage open discussion, particularly within minority communities where stigma can still exist.
The event was part of Project Rise, the Dawoodi Bohra community’s global initiative focused on health, hygiene and environmental wellbeing. In the UK, the community has been actively involved in promoting preventative healthcare through programmes such as diabetes awareness events and senior wellness initiatives.
Funds raised during the afternoon will support Macmillan’s work helping cancer patients and their families across the UK. While cancer survival rates have improved significantly over recent decades, diagnoses continue to rise and inequalities in access to care remain, highlighting the importance of community-led education and support.
Miss Becky Turner-Knowles, a Macmillan Cancer Support representative, praised the initiative, saying the generosity shown would help ensure vital cancer care continues to reach those who need it most.
The opening of the Gidea Park community centre marks an important milestone for the Dawoodi Bohra community, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to supporting local residents through health awareness, education and compassionate community action.
