Every day, police officers face a barrage of labels. They’re told they’re too lazy, too overweight, not proactive enough. They are expected to enforce new initiatives, many of which are things they’ve been doing for years. Officers often feel like political tennis balls, thrown from one side of the court to the other, unsure which instruction to follow.

What rarely makes the headlines is the support they need and fail to get, to do their job effectively. Policing has become one of the toughest professions, yet some boroughs are left with zero cover because officers are constantly called away to cover protests, events, and endless operational demands. Burnout is real. Long shifts, high-stress incidents, and the constant pressure to perform take their toll. Officers are not superhuman, they need breaks, support, and recognition for the work they do.

Despite social media criticism, like the recent live facial recognition operation in Romford, where viewers questioned “Why are there so many officers doing nothing?”, the reality was very different. Seven arrests were made, showing that what appears idle is often essential police work in action.

The truth is, officers are struggling. Recruitment numbers are falling, mental health issues are rising, and morale is low. Communities see gaps on the streets, but solutions are rarely discussed. Better pay, working conditions, and support for officers’ wellbeing are crucial if policing is to remain effective and safe for the public.

We owe it to our police officers to see beyond the headlines and understand the pressures they face. Supporting those who protect us is the first step to safer communities and a stronger police force.
