NatWest has confirmed that its Hornchurch High Street branch is set to close, sparking concern among residents and businesses who still rely on face-to-face banking services.

The branch, located at 120–122 High Street, Hornchurch, is scheduled to shut on 21 May 2026 as part of a wider programme of bank closures being rolled out by NatWest across the UK.

NatWest says the decision has been driven by a sharp shift in customer behaviour, with more people choosing to bank online or via mobile apps rather than visiting physical branches. The bank has stated that banking habits have changed dramatically in recent years, leading to a reduced demand for in-branch services.

They insists customers will still be able to access services through online and telephone banking, as well as Post Office counters for basic transactions. The bank has also said it will provide guidance to customers on alternative ways to manage their accounts once the branch closes.

The Hornchurch closure reflects a wider national trend, with hundreds of bank branches disappearing from UK high streets in recent years. Campaigners have repeatedly warned that the loss of local branches risks leaving some residents digitally excluded and further weakening town centres already under pressure.

Customers affected by the closure are expected to receive advance notice and information on support options ahead of the May 2026 shutdown.
