Plans to build a new Islamic community centre in the heart of Romford have taken a significant step forward, with formal proposals now progressing through Havering’s planning process.

The scheme would see the partial demolition of buildings at 222–226 South Street and their redevelopment into a mosque.

The project is being explored after the existing mosque faces relocation due to the wider Bridge Close regeneration programme.

What Is Being Proposed

Early proposals outline a redesigned site that retains part of the existing façade while introducing new architectural features — including a dome and minaret — alongside an extended structure to house the centre.

The development has already been discussed at multiple pre-application meetings with council officers and continues to evolve following feedback from planners and design reviewers.

Key concerns raised so far include:

  • Transport and movement around the site
  • Building design
  • Servicing arrangements
  • The number of expected attendees and travel patterns

Council members requested more detailed information on these issues before a full planning application is determined.

A Highly Accessible, But Sensitive Location

The site sits just south of Romford town centre in an area with strong transport accessibility.

However, it is also close to locally listed buildings and lies partly near flood-risk zones, factors planners will need to weigh carefully when assessing the final application.

Replacement Mosque for a Growing Community

Havering Councillors have previously backed public consultation on relocating the centre, saying the South Street site could provide enhanced facilities serving both worshippers and they believe the wider community.

Leaders have also encouraged residents to share their views respectfully during consultation, emphasising that everyone has equal rights in how and where they worship.

Still Not a Done Deal

Importantly, early committee presentations do not constitute planning approval. Any eventual decision will follow full consultation, publicity and detailed assessment once a complete application is submitted.

There is no need to have a mosque there. There is one at Hackney and in Ilford and Whitechapel and chadwell heath as well. The traffic is mad near the hospital. More accidents.

I don’t really want a mosque in Romford, we have enough. Even our local centre that was built supposedly to replace the demolished youth centre has a mosque in it. Muslims can pray anywhere so why use our shopping centre. It will bring people in from everywhere

No mention of how many people will attend every day. Is there any need for a new Mosque. Hardly need any more congestion so close to the Hospital. Probably be rushed through before the council elections in May
