Romford’s Reform Member of Parliament Andrew Rosindell MP this week took Reform MPs and its leader Nigel Farage to meet the Chagossian people here in the UK, highlighting the ongoing struggle for self-determination and shining a spotlight on the government’s handling of the British Overseas Territory. Mr Rosindell has long campaigned for the rights of the Chagossian people and continues to call for urgent action to ensure their voices are heard.

He told the Havering Daily:“I took Nigel and the other MPs to meet the Chagossians community who live in the UK. Reform UK is the only party to have committed to giving them self-determination which is something I have fought for over 25 years in parliament. Conservatives refused to do the same when in government which led to the catastrophic situation we are in today losing a vitally important British Overseas Territory for our defence and security, costing the UK £35 billion pounds. The Conservatives never listened to me and now Britain and the Chagossian people who are being betrayed are paying a huge price!”

Andrew Rosindell also stated: “This Bill is nothing short of surrender. It hands away British sovereignty over a territory we have administered for more than two centuries. It binds future generations of British taxpayers to a grotesque financial settlement – tens of billions of pounds paid to a foreign government – simply so that we may lease back a military base that is vital to our own security and that of one of our closest allies. ‘An act of total weakness.’ That is how it has been described by the President of the United States of America – and says everything about this government’s approach. And it does all this without the consent, the consultation, or even the courtesy of a democratic vote for the Chagossian people themselves. This is most certainly not self-determination. For that reason, Reform UK tabled an amendment in lieu, reflecting the proposal advanced in the other place by Baroness Foster of Aghadrumsee, calling for a referendum before ratification. We rightly insist on self-determination for the Falkland Islanders. We strongly uphold it for Gibraltar. And we defend it for every other British Overseas Territory. The Government is happy to support this principle for Greenland, but why not for the British Chagossians? Why is it His Majesty’s Government cannot bring itself to ask the Chagossian people themselves what future they want for their own ancestral home.”
