Latest: TfL Insist Gallows Corner Will Reopen in Spring 2026 But Still No Dates for Phased Access.
Reform GLA Member Keith Prince has received Transport for London’s latest update on the long-running works at Gallows Corner, as residents continue to face major disruption with no clear dates yet confirmed for a phased reopening.
TfL has again stated that the flyover renewal remains on track for a spring 2026 reopening, with structural repairs, safety upgrades and utility works continuing across the junction. While progress is being made on site, frustration remains high locally over the lack of firm timescales for easing traffic restrictions.
Responding to the update, Mr Prince questioned TfL over the absence of clear dates for the phased reopening that residents were previously promised.
Mr Prince told The Havering Daily:
“Nice words and pictures from TfL, but where are the dates for the three phases we were promised and have been asking for the last three months? We were promised the date for when the three different phases would be completed and allow more access to cars, and have not received it.”
According to TfL, significant progress has been made at the eastern end of the flyover, where piling works have now been completed. A total of 12 new piles have been installed to support replacement foundations, with two of the three new foundations already in place. Work is continuing on the final damaged eastern abutment, which is critical to supporting the flyover structure.
At the western end, new crash barriers have been installed as part of wider safety improvements. TfL has said the current plan remains for the flyover to reopen to traffic first, followed by surrounding roads and the roundabout reopening in the weeks that follow.
Alongside the structural works, road safety improvements are also underway. New roadside crash barriers are being installed along the A12 and A127, and work has been completed to allow the pedestrian crossing on Straight Road to be upgraded to a fully signal-controlled crossing. Additional safety measures include new traffic islands and kerb realignments to improve pedestrian safety and manage traffic flows once the junction fully reopens.
A major element of the project involves diverting a large underground water main beneath the junction. Most of the new pipe sections have already been installed using open trench methods. The final section is now being installed using a specialist tunnelling technique, allowing the pipe to pass beneath existing utilities and structures without surface disruption. Once installation is complete, the new water main will be tested and commissioned before being brought into service.
Over the coming months, contractors are expected to complete the remaining eastern abutment, install the final flyover sections, fit bridge expansion joints, and waterproof and resurface the flyover deck.
While TfL continues to insist that spring 2026 remains the target for reopening the flyover, residents and local representatives are continuing to press for clearer timelines and firm dates to provide certainty for those affected by the prolonged disruption at Gallows Corner.
