Council Survey Reveals Majority Believe Crime Is Getting Worse in Havering.
A new community safety survey has revealed growing concern among Havering residents, with nearly half saying they feel unsafe in their own neighbourhoods and the majority believing crime is getting worse across the borough.
The Havering Community Safety Residents’ Survey 2025, published by Havering Council following public consultation, paints a worrying picture of how people feel about everyday life in their local areas. A total of 385 residents took part, with 96 per cent confirming they live or both live and work in Havering.
According to the findings, 49 per cent of respondents said they feel unsafe in their neighbourhood, compared with just 35 per cent who said they feel safe. Almost as many expressed dissatisfaction with where they live, with 42 per cent unhappy with their local area as a place to live or work.
Perceptions of crime were equally stark. Forty-two per cent of residents described crime levels in Havering as high or very high, while a striking 74 per cent said they believe crime has increased over the past year. For many, this view is shaped by lived experience, with 73 per cent saying their concerns are based on incidents affecting themselves, friends, or family.
The survey highlights a growing gap between residents’ expectations of safety and their day-to-day reality. While some areas continue to see strong community spirit, many people say fear of crime is affecting how they use local spaces, from high streets and parks to public transport and shopping areas.
The council has confirmed that the results will help shape Havering’s new Community Safety Partnership Plan for 2026–2029, which is due to be considered by Cabinet. The plan is expected to set out how the council, police, and partner organisations will work together to tackle crime, antisocial behaviour, and public concerns about safety.
However, for many residents, the findings raise urgent questions about whether current measures are enough.
As Havering moves forward with its new safety strategy, residents will be watching closely to see whether these concerns finally translate into meaningful change on the streets where they live.
