Romford Civic Society held its second Romford Market Stall Awards to recognise stall holders who made Christmas Shopping on Romford Market extra-special.

The stalls that received award certificates this year were:-

  • Garden Living (Billy Childs)

Jewellers and Poppy Range (Paul Sharpe)

  • Karen’s Flowers (Karen Dean)
  • Continental Bakers (Tariq)

Judging of market stalls took place over several Christmas Shopping days in December. Judges appreciated the efforts made by all regular stallholders who turned out on the market, come wind, rain, or sun.

However, for these awards they scored the stalls that stood out the most because they made an extra-special contribution to the festive, Christmas experience on the market through creative use of products, colour, lighting, and sound.

A spokesperson for the Romford Civic Society told the Havering Daily:

“We were looking for market stalls that made make a strong positive contribution to Christmas on the market.

”No one had to make an effort to enter their stall to be judged; all stalls were judged.

The judges comprised local shopper Barbara Partridge, civic society member Helen Cresswell, and Wendy Bryce-Thompson and Roy Chowdhury, Conservative Prospective Council Candidates for St Edwards Ward, and Emma Hawkins Labour Prospective Council Candidate.“

In addition to the standard of cleanliness and attractiveness that shoppers expect all year round” said Barbara, “at Christmas, all shoppers appreciate festive displays, bright stalls, and warm greetings.”

Councillor Jane Keane, St Alban’s Ward, who led the judging said, “Romford Market is on especially historic market. We want to recognise those traders who go that extra mile to create a festive atmosphere on the market.”

Andrew Curtin, Chair of the Romford Civic Society said, “The Romford Civic Society exists to promote the improvement of Romford’s public realm and conservation of its built environment. The market is an asset to Romford. We invite others to work with us next year to strengthen the appeal of the market in an increasingly competitive trading environment.”

The Romford Civic Society meets in the Golden Lion Public House in Romford, on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm. New Members are welcome.
