As we approach a new year, and one that will also see local elections, now is the time for a Christmas and New Year message that calls on all those involved in local politics to work together for the good of Havering.

Here at the Havering Daily, we report newsworthy stories for all who reach out to us. We provide a platform where everyone has the opportunity to have their say on matters that affect our borough. However, even among elected members, local politics too often descends into a battle of words, accusations and, at times, remarks that do little to serve the residents they represent.

Havering faces serious and wide ranging challenges. These include significant financial pressures, overdevelopment and, most critically, the ongoing loss of our green belt land, which can never be replaced once destroyed. Residents in Rainham are struggling to breathe , while many families across the borough are grappling with the ever rising cost of living. These are not abstract issues. They are real, lived experiences affecting thousands of people every day.

At a time like this, Havering residents need leadership that is focused, united and prepared to stand up for the borough. This includes fighting against unrealistic and undeliverable housing targets that threaten both our communities and our environment. We are fortunate to have some truly dedicated Members of Parliament and councillors who consistently speak up for Havering residents and make their voices heard. That commitment should be the standard, not the exception.

Time spent sniping at one another or directing criticism towards our police officers, when it is widely acknowledged that there is a severe shortage of officers, is time wasted. Instead, elected members should be focusing their efforts on what meaningful changes they can make to better support policing, community safety and the wider needs of the borough.

As we move towards a new year and an important election period, there must be a renewed commitment from all councillors and elected representatives to work together. Havering deserves representatives who rise above political point scoring, face the challenges before them with maturity and unity, and act in the best interests of the residents they were elected to serve.
