Five Face Prison After Rescuing Beagles from Animal Testing Lab.
Five people in Cambridge have been found guilty of burglary and are now awaiting sentencing, following the removal of eighteen beagles from a lab where animals are used for testing purposes. Under UK law, animals used in scientific research are considered property, meaning the removal constituted burglary.
The incident occurred on 20 December 2022, when Nathan and a group of other individuals entered the facility and removed the beagles. All eighteen dogs have since been rehomed and are living in permanent homes.
At a recent trial, the first five members of Nathan’s team were convicted. The remaining members of the group are still to face trial or sentencing in related proceedings.
Nathan spoke to the Havering Daily about the outcome:
“Eighteen dogs are alive today because of our actions. That is a great deal of comfort to me. Even though I have been convicted, I know these dogs are free and happy. We tried everything legally to get them freed. This was our last resort.”
The case has drawn attention both locally and nationally due to the unique circumstances surrounding the rescue and the ongoing legal questions about the treatment of laboratory animals. Sentencing for the convicted individuals is expected in the coming months.
