No Traffic Issues Identified for Planned Romford Mosque Despite Strong Resident Concerns
Councillors have heard how no traffic issues are anticipated in relation to plans for a new large mosque on South Street, Romford, despite strong objections from residents who believe the development will have a serious impact on already congested local roads.
At the latest Strategic Planning Committee meeting, councillors discussed the pre-application proposals for the Havering Islamic Cultural Centre. Residents raised concerns over both the location of the site and the expected increase in traffic, with many stating they believe the development will worsen congestion in the area. However, councillors were advised that traffic matters had been reviewed and were not believed to present a problem by a National Travel Survey.
According to the meeting minutes, councillors also sought clarification on whether the mosque’s minaret would include loudspeakers. It has since been confirmed that no loudspeakers will be used.
Significant concern was raised regarding the design and access arrangements for worshippers. The plans show a large, elaborate main entrance at the front of the building for men, while the ladies’ entrance is positioned at the rear of the building.
Despite these concerns, councillors praised the ongoing work of the Islamic Cultural Centre within the local community, noting its contribution to community cohesion. Members of the committee also stated that the proposed mosque would benefit the wider community and was welcomed in principle, with no formal objections raised by councillors on traffic grounds.
