The Christmas spirit is shining brightly across Havering after a stolen school minibus has been recovered, thanks to the swift action and support of the local community.

Drapers’ Maylands Primary School in Harold Hill was left shocked and distressed after heartless thieves targeted the school and stole its minibus, a vital lifeline used to support pupils and families. The vehicle plays a crucial role in daily school life, collecting children each morning and ensuring they are able to attend lessons, particularly those whose families may be facing difficulties or emergencies.

Trudy Spillane, Executive Principal of Drapers’ Maylands Primary School, told the Havering Daily she was deeply saddened by the incident.

“I am shocked that thieves would steal a school minibus. This bus is used every morning to collect children for school, supporting families who may be dealing with emergencies or simply need a little extra help.”

She explained that the loss of the minibus would have had serious consequences for pupils in the new year, particularly as schools continue to face financial pressures.

“It will be essential from January when we use it to take our children to the local swimming pool for their lessons, and I am unsure how we will solve that problem. Schools are no longer in a position to hire coaches due to rising costs, and like many others we are already feeling the impact of the cost-of-living crisis.”

Mrs Spillane said the most painful part of the crime was knowing who would be affected most.

“What saddens me most is that it is the children who suffer.”

She also condemned the actions of those responsible, describing how the thieves appeared to know exactly what they were doing.

“The three individuals who climbed the fence and appeared to be practised at stealing vehicles should be ashamed of themselves. Stealing is always wrong because it will inevitably hurt someone else.”

Thankfully, following widespread concern and assistance from local residents, the minibus has now been found. It is currently being checked over by mechanics before being safely returned to the school.

While the theft itself has rightly sparked anger, the recovery of the minibus has highlighted the very best of Havering. Stealing from a school is disgusting, particularly when such vehicles exist solely to support children who are already facing increasing challenges due to the cost-of-living crisis.

Well done to the local community for coming together to help, and a huge shout out to the dedicated staff and teachers at Drapers’ Maylands Primary School, who continue to go above and beyond for their pupils every single day.
