New £2.7m SEND Unit Approved for Royal Liberty School in Romford
Funding has been approved for a new 30-place SEND unit at the Royal Liberty School in Romford, marking a major boost for specialist education provision in Havering.
The £2.7 million unit will support children aged 11 to 16 with communication and interaction needs, including autism, and speech, language and communication needs. It will allow pupils to access specialist support while remaining part of a mainstream secondary school environment.
Councillor Oscar Ford, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said:
“The new facility will help to meet the rising demand for SEND places in the borough and will allow pupils to have specialist support, while still having access to a mainstream secondary curriculum.
“In addition, it will help to reduce the need to place secondary school pupils outside the borough, ultimately reducing the cost of out-of-borough placements.”
The Department for Education has approved the proposed changes to the school, with funding being provided through the SEND Capital Grant.
The new SEND unit is expected to open in time for the September 2027 school year, helping to ease pressure on specialist school places and keep more Havering children educated closer to home.
