Havering Residents Are Thoroughly Fed Up With Endless Roadworks Bring Borough to a Standstill
Havering residents say they’ve had enough of the never-ending roadworks popping up across the borough, clogging streets, and grinding traffic to a halt.
Time and time again so-called “essential” works appear overnight, complete with the usual army of red and white cones, temporary traffic lights and road closures. Yet the one thing residents never seem to spot is anyone actually doing the work.
On Saturday, shoppers trying to get into Hornchurch High Street were stuck in long queues after a four-way temporary traffic light system was set up right in the middle of the weekend rush. Residents told the Havering Daily they were “rightly furious” as what should have been a quick trip for their weekly shop turned into a gridlock nightmare.
The chaos doesn’t stop there. Station Road is also jammed with temporary lights, meaning drivers approaching the town centre from the other side are facing heavy delays too. And now Wingletye Lane has joined the list, with roadworks on the railway bridge and part of the footpath closed off.
This is one of the busiest times of the year for local families trying to shop for Christmas and support local businesses, but instead they are being met with tailbacks, diversions and sheer frustration at every turn.
Residents say the biggest issue is simple: if these works are essential, where are the workers? Why do cones appear, lights go up and roads shut, but the sites are left deserted for days?
For many in Havering, this has gone beyond an inconvenience. It feels like the borough is being completely choked by badly timed, badly managed and seemingly abandoned roadworks. And with Christmas just around the corner, patience is wearing thin.
