Havering took a strong stand this week in the fight against violence against women and girls as the borough hosted a powerful VAWG Innovation Hub in Romford. The event forms part of the national 16 Days of Action campaign and brought key partners together to share experiences, insight and solutions for a safer community.

The day was led by Inspector Jayshree Patel and her team who have been working closely with local organisations throughout the White Ribbon campaign. The session focused on real conversations, practical partnership work and strengthening support for victims.

Speakers included the Havering Council Senior IDVA Lead and representatives from the LADO safeguarding team. Youth mentor Sam from YouThrive shared the support available to young people and how early intervention can make a life changing difference.

One of the most powerful moments came from survivor Gladys Ediale who bravely shared her story. Her experience has driven her to create Strength of a Queen, a support network empowering women affected by domestic abuse. Many attending described her contribution as emotional, inspiring and essential.

The room also heard from representatives from Kaleidoscope, Women’s Aid, Upminster Ward Chair Linda Ven de Hendi and neighbourhood policing officers. Together they discussed how to improve response, raise awareness and prevent harm before it happens.

Acting Inspector Jayshree Patel said the event demonstrated exactly why partnership working matters. “Real change happens when we listen learn and act together.” She added that yesterday proved the strength and commitment of Havering’s community when people unite with a shared purpose. “Yesterday showed the power of partnership.

The Innovation Hub marks a clear intention from Havering Police and local organisations to push forward, challenge silence and strengthen protection for women and girls across the borough. More activity and joint projects are expected over the coming months.
