Are Police Auditors Now Just Another Way To Abuse Officers All For Social Media Entertainment?
Police auditors were once independent observers who monitored police activity to ensure accountability. Today the term has been hijacked by people whose only intention is to antagonise officers for online clicks.
Genuine scrutiny has been replaced by a daily barrage of abuse directed at officers who are simply trying to do their jobs. For many frontline police it has become a dull and predictable routine as there is barely an insult they have not heard.
Over the weekend in London this behaviour reached new levels of absurdity when a man who can only be described in the very loose term of auditor turned his camera on two officers during a protest. He hurled a stream of abuse including vile little man with a moustache, muppet, little bitch, vile horrible police officer, embarrassment, disgrace and other expletives. He believed this performance would make him interesting. It did not.
What made the situation genuinely interesting was what happened next. The same man who had spent twenty minutes verbally attacking officers was then apparently assaulted at the protest. Suddenly the abuse stopped and he called for police assistance. The same officers he had just attempted to humiliate were the ones he expected to protect him.
This episode highlights the bizarre and thankless reality of modern policing. Officers who face constant verbal attacks are still expected to, and always will, run towards danger to protect the very people who demean them. If a serious public order incident broke out these so called vile officers would be the first to intervene to prevent harm. That part never seems to count in the online world of those who hide behind the title of auditor.
