Upminster’s long-discussed Travelodge development is now firmly underway, marking one of the most significant additions to the town centre in recent years.

The new hotel, located at 11 Station Road, will bring 82 rooms along with new ground-floor retail units designed to boost local business . The scheme — a redevelopment project being carried out by London Iron Works, who have agreed a 25-year lease with Travelodge — aims to address what the company describes as a shortage of affordable hotel accommodation in Havering . Construction has already begun, with the site due to open in early 2026 .

Travelodge says the project will deliver “significant inward investment” into Upminster, supporting local shops, cafés and restaurants by increasing footfall in the town centre. They also highlight the new jobs created both during construction and once the hotel opens, arguing that lower-cost accommodation will help support tourism, events, and business visitors — a market they say is currently underserved in the borough .

Despite the economic benefits, the development remains controversial among residents. Many objected during the planning process, saying the four-storey building was out of keeping with Upminster’s character, particularly on a busy and already congested road like Station Road. Concerns were raised about parking pressure, increased air pollution and the long-term effect on the look and feel of the high street. A petition opposing the plan gathered more than 1,000 signatures, demonstrating the strength of local feeling .

Rumours circulated online that the hotel might be used to house asylum seekers, but these claims were firmly denied. Travelodge executives confirmed they have not applied to the Home Office for asylum accommodation, a point reiterated by MP Julia Lopez, who stressed that the site is intended solely for business and leisure guests .

With construction now progressing, the building will begin to rise over the coming months, with more updates expected throughout 2025 as the opening date approaches. For some, the new Travelodge represents welcomed investment and a boost for Upminster’s high street. For others, it symbolises over-development and a loss of the town’s traditional charm. What is certain is that its arrival will reshape the area for years to come.
