When Councillor Jackie McArdle learned that a close friend had lost their home through no fault of their own, she was heartbroken.

Thanks to the quick intervention of South Hornchurch Councillor Natasha Summers, the family were given a place to stay at Royal Jubilee Court in Romford. The temporary accommodation is now home to 76 families and more than 200 children, all waiting for the stability of a permanent home.

For Councillor McArdle, this personal story became the spark for action. “No one should face Christmas worrying about how they’ll feed their children,” she said. “If we can give even a little comfort — a warm meal, a gift, a moment of joy — then that means everything.”

Determined to make a difference, Councillor McArdle has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support the families at Royal Jubilee Court this Christmas. The aim is simple but powerful: to ensure that no family goes without a festive meal or a little joy this season. All donations will go directly towards providing Christmas dinners, ready meals, household essentials, and small gifts for children.

In addition to financial support, Jackie and her team are appealing for donations of selection boxes, toys, books, and household essentials. These items will help bring some much-needed comfort and joy to families spending Christmas in temporary accommodation. Donations can be dropped off at The Ship Café in Rainham on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 12pm to 2pm.

“We want these families to know they are not forgotten,” said Councillor McArdle. “Christmas should be a time of hope, not hardship.”

Jackie is no stranger to helping those in need. Throughout the year she works at The Ship Café, a community hub that provides meals and support for struggling families. It’s here that her compassion for others shines brightest — and where her team will be preparing and delivering meals for residents at Jubilee Court this December.

The situation at Royal Jubilee Court is a reflection of a wider crisis — one that sees families placed in temporary accommodation through no fault of their own. Yet, amid the challenges, local people like Councillor McArdle are showing the true spirit of Havering: kindness, community and care.

“This is about giving people dignity and hope,” she said. “No one should feel forgotten, especially at Christmas.”

Donations to support Councillor Jackie McArdle’s Christmas appeal for the families at Royal Jubilee Court can be made through her official GoFundMe page.
