The Member of Parliament for Romford, Andrew Rosindell MP, has slammed the European Court of Human Rights, calling it a “sword against our democracy.”

Mr Rosindell, who has long campaigned for the UK to leave the ECHR, warned it is putting citizens at risk by allowing dangerous criminals to remain on our streets. Speaking to the Havering Daily, he said:

British liberties and human rights didn’t start in 1950 with the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). Mr Rosindell explained that it was thanks to the long-fought traditions of the British people that the UK helped establish the ECHR, so that after the Second World War, other European nations could enjoy the same freedoms that Britain had upheld for centuries.

He added: Today, however, the ECHR has become a sword against democracies like ours, forcing the country to keep people who entered illegally and went on to commit heinous crimes on our streets.

Following yesterday’s debate, Mr Rosindell dismissed suggestions by Labour MPs that countries like Australia, Canada, and New Zealand must be human rights-abusing dictatorships. On the contrary, he said, they are free, self-governing, and prosperous nations, able to flourish thanks to institutions rooted in British tradition.

He also believes: It’s time for the UK to follow the example of these nations and reclaim full sovereignty. Britain should repeal the Human Rights Act, leave the ECHR, take back control of its laws and borders, and restore the authority of the UK Parliament.
