Why Havering Council Supporting Zane’s Law Is A Victory For Our Children.

Havering Council has ‘reaffirmed its commitment to public safety and environmental protection by supporting the national Zane’s Law campaign’.
On behalf of Clear the Air in Havering, I have repeatedly lobbied Havering Council to back Zane’s Law.
As a member of the UK Landfills Campaign, I spoke this summer at the Parliamentary Summit for Zane’s Law on behalf of children living in beautiful Rainham, their childhoods blighted by smoke from the Launders Lane fires.
Zane’s Law is being tirelessly fought for by seven-year old Zane Gbangbola’s endlessly loving parents, Nicole and Kyewho lead the UK Landfills Campaign in their beautiful son’s memory.
Zane – himself an environmental activist – tragically died aged just seven when he was poisoned by hydrogen cyanide gas (HCN) as a result of floodwater entering their Surreyhome that had passed through a toxic landfill site. Zane’s father Kye was also poisoned by HCN and has been left paralysed.
Zane’s Law will ensure statutory accountability and candour by requiring local authorities and the Environment Agency to hold regularly updated public registers – not only of landfill sites across the country – but of possible landfill sites.
Crucially, Zane’s Law will protect the public purse: it will require these statutory bodies to ensure contaminated land is remediated following the Polluter Pays principle. This will require the Government to take full responsibility for all necessary funding, which can be recouped by those responsible at no cost to the public purse.

A detailed report will be presented for political approval of Havering Council’s support of Zane’s Law at Full Council on 12 November.
