Who we are, why we are: more than a festival!

The East London LGBTQ+ Film Festival is a film festival created by Kaleidoscope to showcase sensational independent and studio cinema, made for and by members of the LGBTQIA+ community. This festival hopes to inspire queer youth, create a safe space for queer people to foster connection, and raise important funds for the charitable organisation Kaleidoscope.

Kaleidoscope is a Romford-based LGBTQ+ charity founded in 2022 by festival directors Carrie Kendall and Natalie Keeling, who had grown tired of not having an LGBTQ+ scene in Romford and felt that support and advice just wasn’t available for those in need. Carrie and Natalie have since been working tirelessly to create vital safe spaces for queer youth to socialise, be creative and seek support, all without judgement or fear.

Kaleidoscope has hosted everything from film nights to pride celebrations, and the social group has a monthly meet up for 17s – 24s based at Lumiere Cinema in Romford.

A note from the festival director:
Carrie Kendall says “Since the development of our festival there has been an increase in queer events in Romford including mystery film nights that are, month by month, gaining traction. This proves that Havering has a strong queer community – they just haven’t had a pace to thrive in for the longest time. We want to continue to support this change by providing safe spaces through the festival, Kaleidoscope and our Pride celebrations in Romford. Whether you’re an ally or part of the LGBTQ+ community, come along and enjoy some great films with some great people!”
