Mayor’s Merit Award: Honoring Local Crochet Contributors
Three members of the community have been recognised with the Mayor’s Merit Award for their outstanding contributions to the Palliative Care Crochet Appeal, which supports patients and families at Queen’s Hospital in Romford.
The awards were presented by the Mayor of Havering, Councillor Osprey, during a small ceremony held at Tesco Superstore, Rainham. The awards were given following nominations by Jon Gildersleeve, who has played a leading role in coordinating several NHS community knitting and crochet campaigns.
Among those recognised were Lily, Kaya, and Jan, who accepted the award on behalf of her 94-year-old mother Madge, who continues to knit beautiful angels from home.

The trio’s efforts form part of a growing community initiative supporting Queen’s Hospital’s Adult Critical and End-of-Life Care Units, the Neonatal Unit, and the Patient Experience Team. The project encourages residents to crochet butterflies, angels, and other comforting handmade items to bring warmth and kindness to patients and their families.
Lily and Kaya, both talented young crocheters, have been making colourful butterflies, while Madge has dedicated her time to creating knitted angels. Each handmade piece serves as a heartfelt reminder that the local community cares deeply about those in hospital during their most difficult times.

The Palliative Care Crochet Appeal has received overwhelming support across Havering and across the UK. The recognition from the Mayor highlights the growing community spirit behind this initiative — one that continues to bring comfort and connection, stitch by stitch.
