Eight people believed to have entered the UK illegally were discovered in the back of a lorry near the M25 early on Tuesday morning.

Emergency services were called to a lorry park just off junction 26 at Waltham Abbey shortly before 6:45 am.

When officers arrived, they found six men and two women concealed in the rear of the lorry. Paramedics assessed the group at the scene before they were taken into custody on suspicion of immigration offences.

An Essex Police spokesperson confirmed:
“Officers attended the location off junction 26 of the M25 shortly after 6:45 am on Tuesday, 21 October. Six men and two women were located in the rear of a lorry and have been detained on suspicion of immigration offences. They were taken into custody where they remain.”

The lorry’s driver was initially arrested on suspicion of facilitating illegal entry into the UK but has since been released without charge. Police have stressed that the arrests are not connected to any businesses operating at the lorry park.

This discovery adds to a series of recent incidents across the South East involving suspected illegal entry attempts via commercial vehicles. Border Force and immigration enforcement teams continue to work with police forces and haulage operators to identify and intercept such cases.

Anyone with information that could assist police is urged to contact Essex Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
