Havering’s Safer Neighbourhood officers have been praised for their incredible bravery after running straight into danger during a violent knife fight in Tesco in Rainham last Thursday evening.

At around 5:15pm on Thursday, 16 October, officers responded to an emergency call reporting a fight involving knives outside the supermarket on Bridge Road. Without hesitation, officers from the local Safer Neighbourhoods Team ran into the scene armed only with their batons — not knowing the level of danger they were about to face.

It is understood that one group of youths, some reportedly armed with large knives, confronted another group. In fear for their safety, the second group fled inside the Tesco store to defend themselves. The quick-thinking officers entered immediately to protect members of the public and prevent further violence.

An investigation was launched straight away. CCTV was gathered, witnesses interviewed, and victim statements taken. Police later identified and located some of the youths who ran into the store for safety, and they were taken home to their parents. Officers ensured that all were safeguarded and debriefed.

The incident, currently under investigation, has shaken local residents who are growing increasingly concerned about rising youth violence across Havering. But for many, it also served as a powerful reminder of the courage and dedication of our frontline officers — those who risk their lives daily to keep the community safe.

Led by Sergeant Basit, these are well-known and highly respected local officers who have worked tirelessly across Rainham, building strong community relationships. On this occasion, they showed exactly what true public service looks like — stepping forward with fear or favour, determined to protect their residents.
