Havering residents are being urged to join a public Zoom meeting at 12.30pm on Friday, 24 October, to hear about the growing number of developments threatening our precious green belt land.

The meeting, hosted by the Council for the Protection of Rural England, CPRE London, will bring together campaigners, local groups, and residents to discuss how we can protect Havering’s open spaces from large-scale developments.

Projects such as the East Havering Data Centre in North Ockendon, and the proposed housing schemes at Benets Road and Wingletye Lane are just some of the plans causing concern.

Across the borough, people are fighting to preserve what’s left of our countryside — from the quiet country lanes in Noak Hill to the peaceful fields behind Hornchurch’s Benets Road and the beautiful Fenn Lane in North Ockendon. These spaces are home to wildlife, provide vital flood protection, and give residents somewhere to breathe.

You can sign up free of charge to join the meeting via Eventbrite here:

One of Havering’s most dedicated environmental champions, Ian Pirie from Havering Friends of the Earth, has spent years tirelessly campaigning to protect our local environment. Ian works quietly behind the scenes, writing letters, organising protests, and bringing communities together. His commitment to protecting our land, trees, and wildlife has inspired countless others across Havering to take action. Ian is a true gentleman whose dedication to saving our planet and wildlife has inspired us all throughout the years.

“Our green spaces are the lungs of Havering,” Ian said. “Once they’re gone, they’re gone for good. We owe it to future generations to fight for what’s left.”

Next Friday’s meeting is a vital opportunity for residents to stand united, learn more, and take part in the campaign to protect our green belt.
