What Defines Patriotism in Havering’s Diverse Community?
This thought-provoking piece on patriotism and community in Havering has been penned by HRA Councillor Gillian Ford. In her reflections, Cllr Ford invites us to contemplate the deeper meaning of our connection to the borough and what defines our shared identity amidst our diverse backgrounds. She prompts us to consider not only our challenges but also the values and aspirations that unite us as residents of Havering.
Patriotism for where you live can be powerful, emotional and emotive. But what does patriotism really mean to you?
Flying a flag is a clear and visual indicator of belonging, yet on its own, it doesn’t change much around us. Havering is home to residents from all walks of life, different backgrounds, religions, educations, political leanings and careers. Despite our differences, we all share the same borough.
So what is it that makes us Havering? And, more importantly, what is it that you want from the area you live in?
We know the frustrations that unite us – the roadworks, potholes and daily inconveniences that impact us all. But looking beyond the basics, what truly makes a place feel like home? Is it community spirit? Green spaces? Safety? Opportunity? Culture?
For some, home is defined by history and tradition; for others, it’s about progress and opportunity. Maybe for you it’s the schools, the parks, the neighbours, or simply the sense that Havering is yours.
At its heart, patriotism is not just about waving a flag, it’s about what we stand for together. So the question is: what do we want Havering to stand for?
