Romford MP Slams Gallows Corner Delays As ‘Completely Unacceptable.’
Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford, has written to the Secretary of State for Transport, The Rt. Hon. Heidi Alexander M.P., to express serious concern over the unacceptable delays to the refurbishment of the Gallows Corner flyover – a vital transport link connecting Essex into London and serving thousands of commuters daily.
In his letter, Mr Rosindell highlights the long-standing issues surrounding the flyover, which was originally installed as a temporary structure in the 1970s and has since become one of the most heavily used junctions in the region. Despite years of campaigning for a full redesign, only a limited refurbishment programme was announced earlier this year, with an initial completion date set for September 2025.
However, that timeline has now slipped, with no clear revised schedule provided to the public. Mr Rosindell expressed frustration that, following the closure of the flyover, works did not begin in earnest for several weeks – a delay he described as “a lack of proper coordination and urgency from the responsible authorities.”
The impact of the delays has been felt acutely across Romford and the surrounding areas. Simultaneous road closures in Rise Park, Gidea Park, and other parts of the borough have forced traffic onto residential streets, causing severe congestion, long journey times, and in some cases, total gridlock. Local businesses have reported significant losses due to reduced accessibility and footfall.
“This is a wholly avoidable situation,” Mr Rosindell said. “It is the result of poor planning, a lack of communication, and an apparent disregard for the daily lives of the people of Romford and the wider area.”
Mr Rosindell is calling on the Department for Transport to urgently engage with Transport for London to determine the cause of the delays, provide a clear and revised timeline for completion, and ensure better coordination going forward. He has urged the Secretary of State to take immediate action to prevent further disruption and restore confidence in the project.
“Romford has waited far too long for real action at Gallows Corner,” Mr Rosindell added. “We cannot accept further excuses or delays while local people suffer.”
