‘Stop Policing Trivial Social Media Posts And Focus On Serious Crime’-Romford MP Andrew Rosindell.
The Member of Parliament for Romford Questions The Prime Minister over the ongoing ‘trivial social media’ policing and says its time to focus officers on serious crime.
Yesterday in the House of Commons, during Prime Minister’s Questions, Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford, raised serious concerns about the misuse of police time in investigating trivial social media posts and non-crime hate incidents, following a meeting with Romford’s borough commander.
Speaking directly to the Prime Minister, Mr. Rosindell said:
“My local borough commander in Romford tells me how much valuable police time is being wasted investigating trivial social media posts and non-crime hate incidents. Shouldn’t the police be patrolling our streets rather than moderating the internet? So, will the Prime Minister commit to urgently updating the Public Order Act to reflect the realities of the digital age so that our police are focused on tackling real crime and upholding freedom of speech rather than suppressing it?”
In response, the Prime Minister failed to give a clear answer.
“Well, Mr. Speaker, I’ve been clear on a number of occasions. I do want the police to concentrate on serious crime and on crime that matters most to our communities in each of our constituencies. I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again today.”
Mr. Rosindell commented after the exchange:
“Our police should be patrolling our streets, not policing social media posts. I asked the Prime Minister to urgently review the outdated Public Order Act. Sadly, he dodged the question. It’s about time we focus on real crime.”
Andrew Rosindell M.P. has long championed common-sense, traditional policing and the protection of civil liberties. He will continue to press the Government to take decisive action to modernise the Public Order Act and restore public confidence in law enforcement priorities.
