YMCA Thames Gateway Group Announced As Finalists For National Youth Mentor Awards.
YMCA Thames Gateway Group is thrilled to announce it has been shortlisted as a finalist at the 2025 Youth Matters Awards, an honour that highlights the charity’s commitment to supporting the local community.
The charity’s inclusive fitness project has been nominated and recognised for its exceptional impact in the area of Health and Wellbeing, for transforming lives and strengthening communities in Havering, Barking & Dagenham and Dartford.
Programmes include specialised gym sessions for people with SEND, stroke and brain injury rehab, cancer rehabilitation, Boccia, health condition circuit, seated dance, 50+ social clubs, and more – each designed to improve health, build confidence, and foster connection. The charity’s fully accessible gym in Romford features IFI-approved equipment, supported by expert instructors.
“This nomination is a celebration of the passion, resilience and belief that drives our work every day,” said Charlotte Corby, the charity’s acting Director of Communities “We’re proud of the team behind this project – and even prouder of the communities who inspire it.
“Over the past year, the programme has delivered 455 specialist sessions with 6,479 attendances, plus 533 cancer rehab sessions, supporting more than 500 individuals.
“Behind every number is a personal story. After throat cancer, John regained his strength and tackled debilitating anxiety with YMCA’s support. Margaret, 79, living with severe arthritis, improved her mobility and reclaimed her independence. These powerful transformations show the programme is more than a fitness provision, it’s a lifeline for those who need it most.”
Reflecting on the nomination, Matt Jones, the YMCAs Group CEO shared: “We believe everyone deserves a fair start in life. This project is proof of what’s possible when communities work together to create opportunities and support potential.”
Now in its 16th year, the Youth Matters Awards honour the inspiring individuals and projects that make a vital difference in their community. But the journey isn’t over yet.
As part of the next stage in the Youth Matters Awards, YMCA Thames Gateway Group will now take part in a public vote, where supporters across the country help decide this year’s winners.
“We’re calling on our community – friends, families, partners and neighbours – to help us go all the way,” added Matt Jones “Your vote is more than a click. It’s a powerful show of belief in the communities and young people we work with every day.
“Every vote brings us closer to shining a national spotlight on the difference our project is making.
“Together, we can make sure YMCA Thames Gateway Group gets the recognition it deserves.”
Voting closes on 25 August – https://ymca.org.uk/finalists/
