Councillor Graham Williamson-Cabinet Member For Regeneration, responds to a recent article in the Havering Daily by Councillor David Taylor.

David Taylor’s obsession with MLH is yet another opportunity for him to be economical with the facts and not tell the full story.

As we all know, MLH is a company that is wholly owned by the council.  MLH has made some real headway and is helping to increase housing supply in the borough; this has included the delivery of hundreds of new properties, which have included homes for private sales, private rental and affordable homes – the majority of which have been affordable such as 47 homes at Roe Wood Park, 36 affordable units at St Georges, Hornchurch and 38 three and four bed houses at Victory Place. The company does receive loans to develop these sites, but these have to be paid back, with interest.  MLH has a number of sites in the pipeline, which includes some houses on appropriate sites.

In addition to the affordable housing that Mercury Land Holdings provides, what David Taylor fails to mention is that we already have a significant affordable house-building programme in partnership with Wates and we have been very public in talking about this. Last week for example we promoted the work taking place at Chippenham Road which will contribute to the planned delivery of 3,500 new homes as part of the 12 Estates regeneration programme.

So, he needs to stop trying to score political points using half the facts, pretending to uncover something that is not actually there.  Let’s also remember that MLH was established by the previous Conservative administration.
