Havering Mayor And Councillors Mark The End Of World War II
The Mayor of Havering-Councillor Sue Ospreay, Mayoress, Councillors and Royal British Legion members attended a short service at Hornchurch War Graves to mark the end WWII.
Councillor Barry Mugglestone, Armed Forces Champion, told the Havering Daily: “Although Victory in Europe was celebrated in May 1945, Victory in Japan was not until 15 August 1945. Whilst the celebrations were going on in Europe, we had Service Personnel still fighting the war in the Pacific. We need to remember all those who gave the ultimate sacrifice whilst serving King and country.”
Rev Canon Ken Wylie led a short service of reflection and prayers. He quoted Bishop Hugh Nelson, Bishop to the armed forces who said recently :
“The 80th Anniversary of VJ Day is a moment of profound significance for our nation. It is a time to remember with deep gratitude the courage and sacrifice of those who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.”

Wreaths were laid by the Mayor, past Mayor Cllr O’Sullivan and Mr Les Wright Chairman of the Royal Marines Association.
Chairman of the Hornchurch Royal British Legion, Carole Barratt thanked everyone for attending and invited them back to the RBL Hornchurch for refreshments.
