Councillor Susan Hall AM, Leader of City Hall Conservatives, joined Councillor Keith Prince AM in Hornchurch last week, for the launch of new safer streets campaign aimed at giving retailers and residents a voice.

Councillor Keith Prince, Assembly Member for Havering and Redbridge and Councillor David Taylor have launched a new safer streets campaign following recent reports on crime figures across Havering.

The initiative involves the launch of a borough wide crime survey, asking residents to share if they have been a victim of crime and whether they reported it or not. The survey also asks residents to state how safe they feel.

Cllr Hall AM joined Cllrs Prince AM and Taylor for a visit to retailers in Hornchurch. Local retailers shared their experiences with shoplifting, including a major retailer who was targeted by thieves just an hour earlier. Shoppers told Hall and others that they don’t feel safe and that they don’t bother reporting crimes as “nothing is done about it”.

Councillor Keith Prince AM said;
“The HRA administration in Havering is in denial about what is really going on.

Yes, crime is lower than a lot of London boroughs, but that does not mean we have an acceptable level of crime. Unreported crime remains a big concern.

Conservatives in City Hall put forward a budget proposal to increase police funding by well over £100million. Labour callously voted it down and the Met is now left with a black hole meaning fewer police and the closure of front desks.

Our campaign will make sure Havering residents are heard”.

Councillor David Taylor said;
“I have been clear, the repeated use of “we are a low crime borough” is tone deaf. I’ve spoken to many residents who have witnessed crimes or been victims, and who do not see any point in reporting it.

Whilst some work has been done, there needs to be a greater focus on crime hotspots. This is a town and country borough, with different needs in different areas.

Similarly, the Mayor of London must recognise the need of metropolitan towns such as Romford and Hornchurch.

With police regularly dragged into London for protests and events such as Notting Hill Carnival, our local police become overstretched and often unable to respond effectively.”
