Dagenham And Rainham MP Commemorates VJ Day.
“Dagenham and Rainham has a proud service history and that is why on days like today we must honour those that went before, on whose sacrifices our freedoms were built.”
Today, August 15 this year, 2025, marks the 80th anniversary of VJ Day and the end of World War II. Although the war in Europe had ended with the defeat of Nazi Germany in May 1945, the war in the far east continued for another three months.
British and Commonwealth forces had been engaged in intense fighting across Asia to defend against what was then a Japanese militaristic regime. The Allies were joined in the fight in December 1941 by the USA.
Margaret told the Havering Daily: “August 15th is a date to be remembered, to reflect on and give thanks for the sacrifices of so many men and women who gave their lives in the struggle for freedom against the dark forces that threatened our democracy.
“When we think of the Second World War we often focus on the conflict in Europe, so on this day it is important that we remember those who served further afield.
