Romford MP Raises Serious Concerns Over The Selling Of The Willow Rooms To An Islamic Group Based From Manor Park.
Romford – Andrew Rosindell M.P., Member of Parliament for Romford, has issued a strong statement expressing his deep concern over the recent acquisition of The Willow Rooms, a long-standing community venue located on Willow Street, off Mawney Road.
The venue, historically used for local events, community gatherings, and private functions, has been purchased by an external organisation with plans to convert it into a religious facility.
Mr Rosindell stated:
“Throughout my time as the Member of Parliament for Romford, I have always fought to protect our local heritage, culture and traditions, as well as safeguard the character of our individual neighbourhoods, each of which have their own local identities.”
The new owners, an Islamic organisation based in Manor Park, intend to convert the rooms into a Masjid.
However, Mr Rosindell has voiced strong opposition to the unilateral nature of the acquisition and the lack of consultation with local residents and elected representatives.
“I was devastated to learn that our much loved “The Willow Rooms” in Willow Street, off Mawney Road, which has long been part of Romford’s community life, has been sold off to an outside organisation. This venue was always intended as a hall for the use and benefit of the whole community. It has always provided a neutral space where everyone is welcome.”
Mr Rosindell emphasised that the organisation behind the acquisition is based in Manor Park and has no prior connection to Romford. He criticised the absence of engagement with the local community and himself as the town’s elected MP.
“This is not how we do things in Romford. When any significant change is proposed, especially one which will alter the nature and use of a long-standing community building, the people who live here must be fully informed, and their voices listened to. It is both disrespectful and unacceptable that these plans appear to be moving forward without the open dialogue that local people rightly expect.”
Concerns have also been raised by residents regarding potential disruptions, including increased traffic, parking issues, and changes to the peaceful character of the Lower Mawneys area.
Mr Rosindell has pledged to work alongside the St. Edward’s Ward community action team – Wendy Brice-Thompson, Erwin Luzac, and Roy Choudhury – to raise the matter with Havering Council and ensure that no change of use is approved without full public consultation
“The Willow Rooms must continue to be open as a community hall for all local people… There must not be a change of use to a place of worship by stealth.”
Mr Rosindell is also seeking a meeting with the new owners to discuss the community’s concerns and explore a way forward that respects Romford’s traditions and the voices of its residents.
